FAQs about HIV+ Care

Have even more questions? Find answers in our in-depth guide to HIV treatment.

What is HIV ?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system and lowers the body’s natural defence against illness and disease.

HIV is a lifelong condition. It can be managed with effective treatment, but right now there isn't a cure.

How is HIV transmitted?

There is a risk of HIV being transmitted only when one of the following fluids enters the bloodstream of somebody else. This can be through broken skin (e.g. injecting drugs, cuts or sores) or a mucous membrane (in the rectum, vagina, and penis):

  • Blood

  • Anal fluids

  • Vaginal fluids

  • Breastmilk / Chestmilk

  • Semen / Pre-cum

Transmission can occur through: broken skin, penis opening, vagina, rectum, and foreskin.

How much does HIV+ care cost?

There is no cost to receive HIV+ care through Freddie, and most required medications are covered for those that have public health insurance within their province of residence.

Is virtual care right for me?

While we strive to serve as many patients as possible, virtual care may not be a good fit for you if:

  • If you are under 18 years of age

  • If your CD4 count is less than 200 and not currently on treatment

  • If you have untreated tuberculosis or active cancer

  • If you are or have a chance of being pregnant

Where is Freddie HIV+ care available?

HIV+ care through Freddie is currently available in the provinces of Ontario and Saskatchewan, but we hope to expand this very soon.

Is Freddie HIV+ care just for gay men?

No! Freddie’s virtual HIV+ care program is for anyone living with HIV, no matter your gender, sexuality or body type. Our skilled clinicians can provide care for the entire HIV community.
