Stephen Welch's Journey on PrEP
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Who you are, what you do, etc.
I'm a professional dancer, instructor, and choreographer. I’m also a full time drag queen with aspirations of international fame. I’ve been with my husband for nearly 12 years, and love him and our life so much.
How did you first start considering PrEP?
The idea of taking a pill that’ll stop the spread of HIV to me is a no brainer. If you handed me a pill and said this’ll prevent cancer I’d be on it like icing on a cake.
How has your journey of accessing PrEP been?
PrEP has been super easy to obtain with Freddie. So easy, convenient, and fits into my go go go lifestyle.
What change do you notice the most now that you’re on PrEP?
Nothing really has changed, my sexual confidence is much higher.
Tell us a bit about your experience with Freddie so far! How does it compare to accessing PrEP through other methods?
As I was referred to Freddie, I never thought about it much before… minus the fear of consulting my doctor about it, since the nature of PrEP still has some stigma around the reasons for why we need it.
Do you have any advice for people out there considering PrEP?
DO IT! It doesn’t hurt, it keeps you safe, and Freddie makes the process easier. Less steps than baking a cake.
